I have a confession to make... and please don't "judge" me for it.
Well, actually, let me ask you a question first...
Are you always short on time and constantly struggling with feeling overwhelmed?
If you're like most church secretaries and assistants I know, you're probably shouting yes!
I believe this is because many of us are in a constant tug of war battle between our "sanity" and one of three primary issues.
In a lot of cases many of us struggle with all three.
I call them the Three Temptations and, when left unchecked, they are responsible for that constant feeling of overwhelm that causes many church secretaries and assistants to feel frustrated and on the verge of quitting... your job... your church... EVERYTHING!
I'm talking about the type of frustration that leads to hopelessness and causes you to think irrationally and make emotional decisions.
This "triple threat" is what prohibits you from getting to the next level in your career... and maybe even your life...
Even though you can clearly see where you want to go, getting there is like treading water in the Atlantic ocean.
The types of roadblocks created by these 3 types of issues create a type of despair that only another church secretary can fully understand.
If you're like many of the church secretaries and assistants I receive emails from every day, you're probably disappointed with the "fairy tale" that you thought working in ministry was going to be.
Along with disappointment comes complacency and an "I don't care" attitude regarding your current state.
You'll find yourself doing just enough to get by, never giving 100% effort and just coasting through each day.
You might even end up the cranky ole' secretary that nobody wants to be around.
How can I "read your mail" so well?
Because I've Been There Too...
I totally confess... I've been frustrated. I've been disappointed. I've even had moments where I said "enough is enough, I'm outta here!"
You probably know exactly what I'm talking about.
Nothing seems to go right.
An event blows up in our face.
The church bulletin (all 500 copies) had a glaring typo on the front page.
Pastor's not happy with the letter you wrote and can't understand why you didn't get it right when "he told you exactly how he wanted it to be."
Bro. John didn't show up like he said he would and now there's no food for the new member's dinner.
This list can go on and on...
Well, needless to say I'm still here and I didn't let the Three Temptations get the best of me, but I know I'm not alone when I say there are times when managing this position has seemed impossible and has gotten really tough.
But it was during these times took a step back and asked myself, "who told you it was supposed to be easy?"
The Three Temptations And How
To Overcome Them...
First of all, being a "star assistant" ain't easy. There's always something.
Some church secretaries "get it" and are able to master all of the dynamics of the position and create an environment where their Pastor can relax and be at peace.
For most people though, they always seem to end up on the other side of that "thin line" between loving and hating what they do.
Being organized, efficient and productive just don't come naturally.
But that's o.k. because they don't have to when you have a systematic approach to handling it all.
"What Your Day Looks Like"
Phone calls, memos, board meetings, financial reports, interviews... these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the list of things a church secretary has to be concerned about (I know... crazy, huh?)
Most church secretaries see all of this hard work and do one of two things... they either run from it or get consumed by it.

I don't proclaim to have the answers to everything, but I do believe that God has given me the uncanny ability to be bring order to things that appear chaotic.

However, if I had to choose one that hinders progress more than the others, it would be the area of Offense.
Offense is a trap that spews poison into every other area of your life! It must not be tolerated.
